Hueco Tanks State Park and Historic Site

Hueco Tanks State Park and Historic Site is located east of El Paso in far west Texas. Hueco Tanks is centered around four igneous syenite mountains, and this potent geography has been a component of Indigenous culture and sacred landscapes for millennia. An important aspect of this sacred landscape are the hundreds of pictograph panels located within the boulders and crevices of Hueco Tanks. Since 2024, I have been conducting a rock imagery survey of Hueco Tanks on behalf of Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD). I am one part of a team from Versar Global Solutions, Shumla Archaeological Research and Education Center, and UT Austin who are conducting the work. The goals are to document previously unrecorded rock imagery panels to assist TPWD in developing management and interpretive plans for Hueco Tanks rock imagery.
